Given that I have been sewing for many years, I have used sewing machines in several stages of their evolution. My first one was made of cast iron, came with it’s own wooden table and relied on my not so rhythmic pedaling to sew. The next was electric, so it was much faster. Sewing machines have come a long way in the last three decades, becoming more and more user friendly. Here are some features that have vastly improved the overall sewing experience.

Automatic needle threader

Gone are the days when you struggled to thread the needle. Now, automatic needle threaders are almost standard. If you have been sewing for years this may not impress you much. But if you are considering buying a new machine, you might as well get one with this feature to save you a minor inconvenience.

Top drop in bobbin

Only until recently, the standard was the use of a metal bobbin inserted in a case, then side loaded into the sewing machine. Now we mostly have plastic bobbins that are loaded from the top, located right next to the needle plate. This makes them more easily accessible and following the directional arrows will help you install them correctly.

One step buttonhole

At some point you may need to sew buttonholes. If you ever had to do so, before this feature was available, no one will appreciate this more than you. You only need to set the button measurements and the placement, then the machine will do the rest. I consider this one the MVP of all the features.

Needle plate with measurements

The numbered lines on the needle plate provide measurements to guide you while sewing. You will find the average seam allowance (1.5 centimeters or 5/8 of an inch) and other measurements included. These lines will also help you to keep the stitch lines as straight as possible.

Sewing machine free arm

A free arm on a sewing machine makes it easier to maneuver your garment when you are sewing areas like the armhole. Some machines will come with an already exposed one while others will have a have a detachable part that exposes it.

It shouldn’t be difficult to find a machine that has all these features whether you find it in a store or online. Whichever brand you decide to buy these options should be available.
