So you want to sew.

There are many reasons you arrive at this decision.

An episode of ‘Next in Fashion’ or ‘Project Runway’ inspires you.

Or you inherit a vintage sewing machine from your grandmother or other family member.

Or you are having trouble finding garments that flatter you body in the ready made clothing section.

Or you have a favorite dress or shirt that fits just right, so you wear until it is threadbare so you want to replicate it.

Or the designs you desire are expensive and you are convinced that you can make them yourself at a much more affordable price.

Whatever the reason, I recommend that you make a reasonable investment. Both financially and time wise. I am absolutely not a dream killer. I have experience with students who have invested hundreds of dollars into a hobby only to abandon it later. Here are a few tips that will leave you out of this category.

  • Invest in an affordable sewing machine.
  • Invest in a basic sewing kit.
  • Invest in at least five to ten basic lessons.
  • Buy affordable easy to work with the fabric.
  • Schedule the time to sew.
  • Set a reasonable goal to complete an easy project.
  • Be patient.
  • Complete a project or two before you give up.

Considering these few tips as you get started on your sewing journey, will help keep your costs relatively low in the initial stages. It will also guide you so you can meet your goals.

Sewing is a meditation.
